Could Drones Be the Future of Jump Starting Your Vehicle? Ford Sure Think So

Drones for Ford

There is nothing quite like getting behind the wheel of your vehicle only to find that when you turn the key, nothing happens. Jumpstarting your vehicle is simple but it’s certainly not an activity driver would call enjoyable or inconvenient.

But what happens in situations where you are in an area where there’s no one to help you jump your car? Or maybe you don’t have jumper cables to use even if you do have a helping hand. Ford thinks they’ve got a solution — automated drones that can jump-start your Ford vehicle for you.

Ford Remains a Symbol of Innovation With Potential Drone Tech

According to recent reports, Ford Motor Company is developing new tech in the form of drones that will help their customers get back on the road if they find themselves with a dead battery. This innovative tech is none other than a drone that will literally fly to your vehicle, boost it up with power, and get you back on the road.

According to reports, Ford filed their patent in April of 2017 and described the tech as a system with a “computer programmed to actuate a plurality of drones to first establish one or more electrical connections therebetween and then to provide a jump start to a vehicle.”

The patent filing became available on March 28th and details that drivers that want to use the nifty function would need to send out a “Jump Start Request.” Upon this request, one or more drones will zip over to your location and get your vehicle up and running again.

Will Drone Jump Starting Be Available At Your Local Ford Dealer?

So could this innovative tech be available at your Ford dealer anytime soon? Well according to a company spokesperson, drivers shouldn’t get too pumped up just yet. Filing a patent on new technology doesn’t necessarily mean that the technology will be available anytime soon. The company spokesperson shared with Fox television station, “We don’t have any plans to deploy this. We submit patents on new inventions as a normal course of business but they aren’t necessarily an indication of new business or product plans,” adding, “In 2022, Ford was granted 1,342 patents – or more than three a day – spanning a wide range of ideas.”

Considering that Ford has been the leader of innovation over the past couple of decades, patent filing and innovative tech like drone jump starting kits from the company should come as no surprise. The automaker has recently released similarly ambitious patents including one that allows drones to help Ford owners locate their vehicles. Another offers tech that would allow for vehicles to repossess themselves by going into a “lockout condition” if the owner fails to make a payment.

Ford Innovation Continues

While you, unfortunately, won’t be able to take advantage of this drone battery jumping technology anytime soon, these new patents are a nice indication of what potentially lies ahead. Until then, drivers should continue to expect rollouts of innovative tech and enhancements from one of the nation’s leading automakers.
