Honda Revives the HP-X for Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

Honda is bringing back a piece of its automotive history by reviving the 1984 HP-X concept car. While you can’t see this at your local Honda dealer, this wedge-shaped supercar, designed by Pininfarina, will be showcased at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, making a grand return after 40 years.

The Origin of the HP-X

The HP-X, short for Honda Pininfarina eXperimental, made its debut at the 1984 Turin Motor Show. At the time, it was considered a groundbreaking design, featuring an ultra-aerodynamic shape and cutting-edge technology. The car boasted a lightweight Kevlar and carbon fiber body and was powered by a 2.0-liter V-6 engine derived from Honda’s Formula 2 race car. It was also the first to use ‘ground effects’ to create downforce and had a driver-controlled air brake.

A Return to Glory

Despite its innovative design, the HP-X never went into production and never appeared at a Honda dealer anywhere in the world. Instead, it paved the way for the iconic NSX, which debuted five years later. Fast forward to today, Honda has fully restored the HP-X, and it will be the first Japanese car to grace the main event field at Pebble Beach in over 50 years.

The restoration of the HP-X stays true to its original form. The car retains its two-tone white-and-navy-blue paint job with red accents, red-and-white suede interior, and button-heavy center stack. Even its single-piece Perspex acrylic canopy, which opens like a fighter jet hatch, remains intact.

The Impact of the HP-X

The HP-X’s return is not just about nostalgia, although it definitely brings up feelings of years past. No,  it’s a celebration of Honda’s commitment to innovation and willingness to take risks. As Acura design executive Dave Marek noted, “The Honda HP-X Concept was the star of the 1984 Turin Auto Show, showcasing elements of engineering excellence and cutting-edge design. The forward-thinking HP-X had an undeniable impact on the industry, highlighting our commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in automotive design.”

Looking Ahead

The revival of the HP-X at Pebble Beach underscores Honda’s dedication to honoring its past while inspiring future automotive design. As Honda Dealer enthusiasts get ready for this historic event, the HP-X serves as a reminder of the brand’s ongoing influence in the automotive world. It’s enough to make any driver wonder, “What is Honda going to come out with next?”

Join the Celebration

The revival of the HP-X at Pebble Beach is a momentous occasion for Honda and car enthusiasts across the globe. As this iconic concept car takes center stage, it’s an excellent opportunity for Honda dealer folks and fans to celebrate the brand’s rich history and bright future. You may not be able to take this unique ride home, but you can still appreciate it and the brand that made it.
